Three Men’s Morris

Three Men’s Morris is the ancient Father of Tic-Tac-Toe and honestly a better game! My mission is to revive this game and it’s cousin’s before they fade into obscurity.

A wooden nature themed Three Men's Morris Board

What is Three Men’s Morris?

Dating back over 3,000 years, this game has been found carved into stone roofing slabs and benches from Egyptian temples to English cathedrals. It’s one of the world’s oldest strategy games—easy to learn, quick to play, and surprisingly clever. A timeless strategy game that’s simple, fast, and fairly repayable. Carved into history and now handcrafted for your table, Three Men’s Morris is perfect for casual competition at home, in a café, or at your local brewery.

Crafted with Purpose

My boards have been handcrafted with the modern player in mind and some minor tweaks to create a refreshing variation those does not change the historic game play:

  • Sunburst Design: Marks the center space, which the first player may not take—ensuring a fairer game.
  • Victory Tracker: A five-dot line with a banner at center and a crown at each end. Start at the banner and move the tracker towards your crown if you win!

This game is best played in multiple rounds. See if you can find the tactics to beat your family and friends 🙂

The Goal

Simply be the first to line up your 3 pieces in a row—vertically, horizontally, or diagonally!

In this game forming 3-in-a-row is called a Mill. The round is instantly over whenever a Mill is formed.

How to Play (2 Players)

The game is played in two phases. A Mill can be made in either phase so watch out and plan ahead!

Phase 1 – Placing Pieces

  • Players take turns placing their 3 pieces on the board.
  • You may place on any empty spot—except the center space for the 1st player.

If no Mill has been made in Phase 1, proceed to Phase 2!

Phase 2 – Moving Pieces

  • Once all 6 pieces are placed, take turns moving a piece to a connected empty space (along the lines).
  • No jumping or diagonal moves (unless a line allows it).

Win the Round

  • Get three in a row to win the round.
  • Move the victory tracker one dot closer to your crown!
  • Alternate who goes first each round.

Win the Match

After a player wins a crown you may count that as one match won. Then you may reset the tracker and start again. I suggest playing best of three matches 🙂
