How To Play Frontier Gambit:
A Note from the Designer
I have an absolute obsession with the wild frontier’s of North America in the 18th century. The Frontiersman and Longhunter’s of the day had a fascinating career and experiences out in what seemed to them, a never ending wilderness. The wild frontier in real life was extremely dangerous and challenging and it amazes me that they could survive with so little technology. Frontier Gambit was borne from my fascination with the historical context of the wild frontier and married with a fantasy universe that I hope is enticing to gamers and more inclusive. I’ll be overjoyed if this game encourages at least one person to dabble more into the history of the 17th and 18th century north American frontier men and women.
Historical Note
Frontier Gambit is set in a fantasy world inspired by the Longhunters of 18th century North America and its wild frontiers. The real hunters during that time pursued a potentially lucrative yet dangerous career of hunting animals, largely only for their furs. While the setting draws on the frontier era, it’s important to acknowledge that the real history involved devastating impacts on ecosystems and Indigenous peoples, which this game does not seek to trivialize or rationalize. “Frontier Gambit” is a work of fantasy that explores personal survival and adventure in a world apart from history’s real-world tragedies. I also like to think the hunters in Frontier Gambit are wasting nothing from these animals.
